When thinking about companies seeking document management resolutions, NASA may not be the first that come to mind but the space agency recently implemented a document management to archive their documents.
According to a report in Washington Technology, NASA recently decided to utilise a document management system with the intention of archiving decades worth of documents relating to the missions and business plans of the internationally renowned space agency. A document management system capable of handling quantities of data as vast as was required by NASA was no small venture but the nature and efficiency of document management are improving all the time.
Document Management - A Mammoth Task
The document management system designed for NASA's purposes had to overcome the fact that they had warehouse upon warehouse that were positively filled with paper documents, many of which included data of a sensitive nature, and these paper documents had to be digitised to provide easy access to all NASA employees with the sufficient level of clearance. With an increasing emphasis on space exploration in the future, particularly to further planets, NASA officials were eager to ensure that the reservoir of knowledge that they have accumulated over the years was readily accessible and a advanced document management system was the ideal means by which to achieve this aim. Ultimately, the document management system being utilised by NASA is a two-tier scheme that keeps the sensitive data well protected and a scalable scanning system that enables production scanning as well as desktop scanning.

According to the report in Washington Technology, acquiring data from old NASA missions would have been a difficult or, indeed, an impossible task for current NASA employees. Speaking to Washington Technology, Tracy Bierman, IT manager at the Kennedy Space Centre, stated, "I would say even the majority of space shuttle stuff was still on paper. We have these two competing motivations. One is that we are NASA, and we would like for the world to have our knowledge. The second motivation is that we deal with rocket engines and highly technical equipment that can be used for bad things, as opposed to space exploration. So we have this requirement to be very secure." As a result of NASA's newly installed document management system, they are now capable of scanning over 90,000 documents per day.
